Religious Customs & Practices In
Singapore Foreword from the President
Singapore has been blessed with religious harmony over the last four decades. Much of it can be credited to the good work of the leaders of the various religions in Singapore who have developed good rapport with each other and have promoted understanding amongst their followers towards other faiths. They have also built a strong foundation of mutual trust and respect through inter-faith activities and events that bring people of different faiths together. The Inter-Religious (lRO) Organisation which was founded way back in 1949 has played a significant role in these efforts.
This latest IRO publication on the "Religious Customs & Practices in Singapore" provides an excellent guide to the many Present day institutions who are involved in organising and individuals inter-faith events and visits to places of worship. lt is a timely publication to remind us not to take for granted the current religious harmony we have, amidst the challenges we face today, namely, the tensions and conflicts that prevail between members of different religions around the world. Though happening over seas, they can have an impact here. Hence, all should be mindful not to allow such happenings abroad to affect our communal relations and inter-faith peace in Singapore.
I commend the IRO for this thoughtful initiative, which should help promote more inter-faith activities in building networks of trust and resilience, for us to always stand united as one Singapore in any crisis.
